The 2016 Richard M. Nixon Presidential Dollar (Buy on eBay) represented the first release of the final year of the series honoring the former Presidents of the United States of America. This was the thirty-seventh release of the series overall.
The Presidential Dollar Program had launched in 2007 to honor the former deceased Presidents of the United States. The coins were released at a rate of four coins per year with the series slated to continue until all eligible Presidents had been honored. Initially the coins of the series were struck and released for general circulation, but since 2012 production has been limited to the number necessary to meet demand from collectors.
Before entering politics, Richard M. Nixon had practiced law and served as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war he successfully ran for Congress and later won a seat in the Senate where he served until being elected vice president. He was elected President in 1968 and served until 1974 when he resigned to avoid impeachment for his role in the Watergate scandal.
The obverse design of the Nixon Presidential Dollar features a left-facing profile portrait of the President designed and sculpted by Don Everhart. Surrounding inscriptions read “Richard M. Nixon”, “In God We Trust”, “37th President”, and “1969-1974”. The coin’s reverse, which was also designed and sculpted by Don Everhart, features a rendition of the Statue of Liberty with inscriptions “United States of America” and the denomination “$1”.
The United States Mint began sales of circulating quality examples of the Richard M. Nixon Presidential Dollars on February 3, 2016. The product options included 25-coin rolls, 250-coin boxes, and 100-coin bags from either the Philadelphia or Denver Mint.
During the year, proof and uncirculated versions of the coin would also be offered within various numismatic products.

The mintage level for the circulation strike Richard Nixon Dollars would see a decline from the prior two releases of the series. The Philadelphia Mint struck 5,460,000 pieces and the Denver Mint struck 4,340,000, for an overall mintage of 9,880,000.

Gerald R. Ford grew up in Nebraska before attending the University of Michigan and Yale University, where he would earn a law degree and also coach the football team. After serving in the U.S. Navy in World War II, Ford served in the United States House of Representatives from 1949 to 1973. He was then appointed Vice President and assumed the Presidency following Richard Nixon’s resignation.

The obverse design of the Gerald Ford Presidential Dollar features a portrait of the former President designed and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill. The surrounding inscriptions include “Gerald R. Ford”, the motto “In God We Trust”, “38th President”, and the dates served “1974-1977”. The reverse of the coin features the Statue of Liberty as designed and sculpted by Don Everhart. The inscriptions read “United States of America” and the denomination “$1”. Incused edge lettering contains the date, mint mark, and motto “E Pluribus Unum”.
The United States Mint began sales of circulating quality examples of the coins on March 8, 2016. Product options included 25-coin rolls, 250-coin boxes, and 100-coin bags from either the Philadelphia or Denver Mint facilities. These products were priced at a slight premium to face value. As with recent prior releases of the series, the Gerald Ford Presidential Dollars were not released for general circulation, but only available within numismatic products sold by the US Mint.
Throughout the year, the coins would be included in other numismatic products. A proof version struck a the San Francisco Mint and carrying the “S” mint mark was included within the 2016 Proof Set, 2016 Silver Proof Set, and 2016 Presidential $1 Coin Proof Set. Uncirculated versions were incorporated into the 2016 Uncirculated Coin Set, 2016 Presidential $1 Uncirculated Coin Set, 2016 Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set, and Presidential $1 Coin and First Spouse Medal Set.
Across the Philadelphia and Denver Mint facilities, the circulation strike mintage for the Gerald Ford Presidential Dollar would reach 10,500,000 pieces.
